Airbrush Tanning Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS AIRBRUSH TANNING?
Airbrush tanning is the process of applying a micro-fine mist of tanning solution to your body using an airbrush. The solution goes on smoothly and evenly, without streaking or an orange color. This method is different from spray booths, as it is applied by hand to your body through our trained and certified technicians. Airbrush tanning gives you a healthy glow without the long-term damage associated with UV damage.
HOW DOES AIRBRUSH TANNING WORK?
Body Heat uses a solution that is approved by the FDA for cosmetic purposes. The main ingredient, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), is the same ingredient used in self tanners. DHA is derived from raw sugar cane and reacts with the proteins in the outermost layer of your skin to produce a beautiful natural, brown color. Our solution is paraben free.
IS AIRBRUSH TANNING SAFE?
According to the Academy of Dermatology, the most effective sunless tanning products available are those containing DHA as the active ingredient. The FDA has also approved DHA for cosmetic purposes. DHA is not absorbed into the body but reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin.
IS THIS LIKE A SPRAY BOOTH TAN?
If you have ever tried a spray booth or mystic tan, this is not the same! Unlike spray booths, custom airbrush tanning can apply the micro-fine mist of solution evenly in hard to reach places. With airbrush tanning, areas that need special attention can get just that. We will make sure you are 100% satisfied.
HOW DARK WILL I GET AFTER ONE SESSION?
Sunless airbrush tanning is not a perfect science. Results will vary based on each individual’s skin type. There are different strengths of solutions that can be used according to each person’s skin type. It helps to have realistic expectations, and we will review that with you before your first session. Please let the technician know if you have any areas of concern on your body. You will be immediately impressed with the results and ecstatic after you tan appears.
HOW LONG DOES AIRBRUSH TANNING TAKE?
Spraying takes about 15 minutes.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE FOR MY TAN?
In order for your tan to take, please shower, shave, and exfoliate prior to tanning. Do not apply deodorant, moisturizer, or makeup. Wear loose fitting clothes and flip-flops. Oil based exfoliants and products will interfere with your tan. Please see our tanning tips for more information.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO AFTER MY TAN?
Do not shower for 6-10 hours - the longer, the better. Avoid sweating as well. Take warm showers and moisturize daily with a DHA tan extender.
HOW LONG WILL MY TAN LAST?
Your tan can last anywhere from 7-14 days, depending on how you take care of your skin. Airbrush tans will fade just as suntans do because of skin cell replacement. Since the tan is on the top layer of the skin, any exfoliants will fade it. Showering with a loofa or bar soap, chlorine from pools or hot tubs, swimming in the ocean, waxing and shaving are all considered exfoliants. Please note that your tan will not just "wash off" in the pool or ocean. Please consult with you technician if you have any questions. Cold weather or excessive sun bathing would also cause the skin to "peel" so
should be protected when exposed to these conditions. Applying our DHA tan extending lotion will help your tan last longer. See the products page.
WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR FOR MY TAN?
Women may wear a dark colored bathing suit, underwear, or opt for no tan lines at all. We ask that men wear some type of swimsuit or underwear. The solution is totally water soluble and it easily washes out of all natural fabrics and most synthetics.
CAN I TAN IF I AM PREGNANT?
Pregnant women have been safely using sunless tanners for years. However, we recommend that you check with your doctor to make an educated decision.
PRE AND POST SPRAY TAN CARE INSTRUCTIONS
• Shower, shave, and exfoliate 8-12 hours before session with an oil free product. We carry several different kinds of oil free exfoliates. We have these available for purchase. Pay extra attention to dry areas such as elbows, knees, and feet.
• Do not apply any deodorant, makeup, or lotion prior to your session. This can affect your tan development.
• Bring a dark swimsuit or undergarments to tan in that are not your best.
• Wear dark, loose fitting clothes and flip-flops.
• If you wax, please do so 24 hours prior to any tanning session.
• Remove contact lenses and jewelry.
• Allow 10 minutes to dry prior to getting dressed.
• Do not wear tight fitting clothing.
• Wait between 6 and 12 hours to shower or exercise…the longer the better. You must allow time for the solution to react with the amino acids in your skin. The cosmetic bronzer will wash off in the first shower. This is normal and is not your tan.
• Avoid anything else that may cause you to perspire or get wet.
• Apply a DHA tan extending lotion Tan Extender moisturizer after showering. We have these available for purchase.
• Moisturize twice daily. Hydrated skin retains tan longer.
• Avoid products that contain alpha hydroxy acids.
• Avoid harsh scrubbing and long, hot baths. Pat your skin dry.
• Keep a towel handy since the bronzer (temporary coloring) may rub off prior to your first shower.
• Apply a sun block with SPF while in the sun.
• If you choose to sleep in the bronzer, sleep on dark sheets or blankets as bronzer may rub off.

When Bad Tans Happen To Good People
Spray tanning is not an exact science, and if you are new to it, then there could be a learning curve until you and your spray tanning technician figure out exactly which product works best for your skin type. This sheet is not meant to concern you, but rather educate you in case you need this kind of information in the next couple of days. This is by no means an exhaustive list of the many tricks that can help undo a bad color result. You will see dozens of suggestions floating around on discussion boards and blogs in the sunless tanning community about this subject
Hair: The most important thing you can do to prevent this is to wear a hair cap during your sunless tan, and to massage a conditioner along your hairline prior to the application of the sunless tanning product. If some color still manages to get onto your hair, all you need to do is go to your local beauty supply store and pick up any hair color remover product. That should fix the problem.
Face: No one wants to have an off colored or splotchy face. If this happens, don’t panic. Your face will fade faster than any other part of your body. That said, if you don’t want to wait for the blotchiness to even out on its own, you can simply apply baking soda and massage it into your face until the sunless tan becomes more even. If it’s the color that you are not satisfied with, then your best bet is a facial toner, preferably alcohol-free. That should do the trick.
Fingernails and toe nails: This particular tip has been around for a long, long time. If your nails are stained yellow (or any other color for that matter), you have a few options. It is widely accepted that Polident in a glass of water is a great soak to whiten your nails. And don’t forget about homemade remedies like lemon juice.
Palms and soles of feet: This discoloration is so widely associated with sunless tanning that I want to make sure to address it. First off, it’s best to try to avoid DHA coming into contact with your palms and the soles of your feet altogether. Barrier creams should be used on both your hands and the tops of your feet, along with Sticky Feet. If you end up with discolored palms or soles, then go to your local beauty supply store and purchase body hair bleach. Be sure to only leave this product on your hands or feet for a few minutes and then wash it off. I never left it on my feet (before Sticky Feet was around) for more than 10-15 minutes. You may have to repeat this process more than once, but it will lighten the discolored areas.
Body: This little trick will be handy for you whether you want to remove your entire tan before your next sunless tan application, or if you just had a bad sunless tanning color result. First off, relax; grab a robe and some baby oil. Massage the oil into your skin and then wait at least 30-45 minutes for it to absorb into your skin. Slip into a bath for about 10 minutes, and then gently exfoliate with a wash cloth. It may take more than one visit to the tub, but this will likely get you where you need to be.
